At sunset look for Mercury in the west, below Jupiter (the big bright one). Venus can be seen in the east before sunrise. Saturn, my personal favorite, will rise after sunset and be visible all night long.

Well students, we have certainly had our share of snow days this semester. Biology projects are due one day after we return. Our Physical science test will be the second day we are back. Environmental science, we have one more chapter to go before a test.

The month of December has many cool objects to look at without a teloscope. Mercury will be visible over the SW horizon at sunset until mid-month. Venus will rise two hours before the Sun over the SE horizon and be easy to see. Jupiter will shine brightly over the south horizon at sunset until midnight. Saturn will then rise after midnight and can be seen above the sourhtern horizon at sunrise. The Geminid meteor shower will peak mid-month. Look forward to a total lunar eclipse on the 21st.

We have finished Arkansas Landform travel brochures in environmental science. Biology students have completed a week long project researching genetic diseases. Their presentations have been very good! Physical science students are studying the conservation of mass and balancing chemical equations.

Test update for Physical Science

Our first test in physical science will be Wednesday, September 8. Students have been working hard to learn metric measuring, graphing, density of solids and liquids, as well as using all types of laboratory equipment. Our review will be the day before the test.

Our first wet lab is Wednesday, August 25th. Students must have all paperwork signed and turned in by this date. Close toed shoes are required and hair pulled back for this wet lab.

Summer reading goal with Mom

My mother, recently retired school teacher of 46 years,and I have pledged to read all of Elizabeth Berg's novels before summer ends. So far, I have read Durable Goods and its sequel Joy School. She's a few ahead of me but that makes it easier to discuss the books over the phone.
Do you have a reading buddy? I think it makes reading more fun. First, find an author or book series you like. Second, find a friend who likes the same book you selected. Finally, read the books at the same time and have conversations about the story or author's message.

For a lesson in humanity- try this book

I had seen this book on several reading lists in magazines and was thrilled to find it in my mom's reading collection during one visit a few weeks ago. The Helpby Kathryn Stockett is just relaxing to read. This novel made me laugh, cry, then laugh again.

I enjoy reading true stories. Running with Scissors is about a boy whose mother gave him away to a psychiatrist who raised him. It is a book that shows that even though your life may not be perfect or ideal all the time you can still be successful if you just keep on moving forward.

The Sea of Trees by Yannic Murphy is a book about a young girl during the invasion of Indochina by the Japanese during the 1940s. This book is somewhat sad but I liked it because it allowed me to see into another culture.

Book Review

I have just finished reading a true story about Antarctica exploration - Emperors of the Ice: A True Story of Disaster and Survival in the Antarctic, 1910-13 by Richard Farr. What a read! This story really pulls at your heart strings. The book tells of a journey in the icy unknown of Antarctica, where men struggle through temperatures below –77°F and windchills of -90°F all in the name of science. These men face the dangers of frostbite, scurvy, hidden ice chasms, and packs of hungry killer whales. The story is written in first-person narrative. The heroic accounts brought to life will stay with you long after the back cover is closed.
